A Human Coach vs An AI Coach

A side-by-side comparison of a human coach and a robotic AI coach, highlighting the difference between personalized coaching and algorithm-driven training.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably noticed that AI is showing up everywhere. It’s writing emails, helping businesses run smoother, and yes—even making its way into the world of endurance training and coaching.

On the surface, that sounds pretty great. More tools, more data, more access. But here’s the thing: AI is only as good as the questions you ask it.

Are You Asking the Right Questions?

AI doesn’t actually “know” anything. It just gives you an answer based on the question you feed it. If you ask the wrong question, you’ll get the wrong answer—and in racing, that can be costly.

Here’s a scenario: a marathoner hits the wall at mile 18. They assume the problem must be electrolytes, so later they ask AI: “How many salt tabs should I take during a marathon?”

AI will spit out a neat electrolyte plan. But here’s the truth: electrolytes weren’t the issue. The runner under-fueled in the first half of the race, skipped a gel or two, and didn’t drink enough fluid to support the pace they were running. By the time they crashed, it wasn’t sodium that was the problem—it was a combination of low glycogen and dehydration.

A coach would step back and look at the bigger picture—pre-race nutrition, timing of gels, hydration strategy, pace, and weather conditions. They’d help the runner see that what they really needed was a balanced plan: taking in consistent carbs every 30–35 minutes, sipping fluids regularly, and adjusting for heat and sweat rate.

AI gave an answer. A coach gives the right answer.

Why AI Isn’t a Coach

Here’s the truth: AI isn’t a coach.

It doesn’t have years of experience. It doesn’t know the nuances of your life, your stress, or your body. And it definitely doesn’t know when you’re asking the wrong question in the first place.

Even AI-driven training plans are built on algorithms created by people—meaning they’re rooted in someone else’s philosophy. And while there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, it’s missing the conversation. Coaching is more than just numbers on a spreadsheet.

Coaching Is More Than Numbers

Think about rate of perceived exertion (RPE). Metrics like heart rate, power, and pace are black-and-white. But RPE—the way you actually feel—is the gray area.

And that gray area matters.

A runner might know their marathon pace is 8:30 per mile and aim to hold that steady. But if their RPE skyrockets halfway through because of heat, stress, or fatigue, and they stubbornly stick to the number, they’ll likely blow up. Numbers matter, but they don’t tell the whole story. A coach helps you interpret both the data and how your body is responding in real time.

You Can’t Talk to AI

Coaching is also about the little conversations—the “I didn’t sleep well,” “work has been stressful,” “my stomach felt off on my long run.” Those details don’t show up in your Garmin file, but they can completely change how your training should look.

AI can’t have that conversation with you. A coach can.

The Bottom Line

AI isn’t going anywhere, and in many ways it’s going to make training more accessible, especially for beginners. That’s a good thing.

But for athletes who want real results—who want breakthroughs, accountability, and someone who actually sees them as a whole person—there’s no replacing a human coach.

Because coaching isn’t just about numbers. It’s about context. It’s about conversation. And most of all, it’s about connection.

If you’re ready to stop guessing and start training with intention, this is your chance. My Performance Run Coaching program is built for athletes chasing personal bests and real breakthroughs.
