The Perfect Warm Up Routine

Today, I want to shine a light on an often overlooked but crucial part of our running routine: the warm-up. Whether you’re gearing up for a casual jog, a grueling race, or a high-intensity workout, starting with the right warm-up can make all the difference in how you feel and perform. Let’s dive into how to tailor your warm-up to fit the day’s run and why it’s a game-changer for both your body and mind.

Why Warm Up?
The purpose of a warm-up goes beyond just getting your muscles ready; it’s about preparing your entire body and mind for the activity ahead. A good warm-up increases your heart rate, loosens your joints, and gets blood flowing to your muscles, reducing the risk of injury and improving your performance.

Tailoring Your Warm-Up
Your warm-up should reflect the intensity of your upcoming workout or race and how your body is feeling that day. Here’s how to adjust your routine based on the workout’s demand:

For Lower Intensity Runs (Steady-State, Tempo Runs, Long Races): Start with 5 to 20 minutes of easy jogging. This light jog helps ease your body into exercise mode. Incorporate dynamic mobility exercises – these are active stretches and running drills that enhance your flexibility and mobility. Cap off your warm-up with a few strides, accelerating to a pace slightly faster than your workout pace. This progression smoothly transitions your body to the workout intensity.

For Higher Intensity Efforts: When you anticipate a more vigorous start, amp up your warm-up. Spend 15 to 30 minutes on an easy jog, followed by dynamic mobility work and strides that exceed your workout pace. If hitting your target pace feels challenging early in the session, add short repeats (100-200 meters) at your goal pace to dial it in before the main event.

Personalize Your Routine
I encourage you to experiment with different warm-up elements to discover what works best for you. The goal is to develop a warm-up routine that feels like second nature on workout or race day. There’s power in routine; it provides comfort and confidence, allowing you to focus on the challenge ahead.

Starting with a set warm-up routine ensures you’re not only physically primed but also mentally focused. By the time you begin your workout or race, you’ll feel ready, capable, and prepared for an outstanding performance.

Embrace the Process
Remember, finding your ideal warm-up routine is a personal journey. What works for one runner might not work for another, and that’s perfectly okay. The key is to listen to your body, be open to adjustments, and pay attention to how different warm-up strategies affect your runs.

As you train, take note of the warm-ups that leave you feeling energized, strong, and ready to tackle your run head-on. Those are the keepers. With time, you’ll hone in on a warm-up routine that’s just right for you, making every run, from the casual jogs to the race days, that much better.
