The Do’s & Don’ts of Fitness

Show me your daily habits, and I’ll show you where you’ll be a year from now.
This simple but powerful truth highlights how the small choices we make each day shape our long-term outcomes.

From which shoe you tie first in the morning to the meals you eat, habits are at the core of everything we do. And, just like brushing your teeth or making your coffee, fitness can become a natural, automatic part of your life, too.

The secret to success? Systems. Having systems in place reduces the mental load of daily decisions, saving you from decision fatigue and relying on fleeting willpower. Below, I’m sharing six key strategies to build fitness habits that stick, and just as importantly, four common mistakes to avoid along the way.

6 Things to Do to Build Fitness Habits That Stick

1. Prepare Ahead of Time: Pack Your Gym Gear or Lay Out your Clothes for an At-Home Workout

If you’re serious about fitting workouts into your schedule, make it easier on yourself. Pack your gym bag the night before or lay out your workout clothes next to your bed.

The fewer obstacles you have, the more likely you are to show up for yourself.

2. Plan and Prep Your Meals

Your body needs the right fuel to perform, recover, and thrive. Take the guesswork out of eating healthy:

  • Cook extra dinner for tomorrow’s lunch.
  • Prep meals in bulk and freeze portions.
  • Use convenient options like meal prep services when time is tight.
  • Stock up on quick, nutritious snacks like overnight oats or protein shakes.

Nutrition is one area you can control—make it a priority.

3. Find an Accountability Partner

Whether it’s a coach, a workout buddy, or a supportive family member, having someone to keep you on track makes all the difference. Accountability doesn’t just help you show up—it keeps you consistent.

4. Exercise First, Worry About Food Later

Here’s a neat trick: when you put effort into working out, you’re far less likely to undo it by choosing unhealthy meals afterward. A tough workout can serve as a reminder of the progress you’re making—use it to stay on track.

5. Do What Motivates or Excites You

Motivation can’t carry you forever, but it can get you started. If you need a boost, try:

  • Playing your favorite playlist or podcast.
  • Wearing new workout clothes.
  • Signing up for a class or program that excites you.

Whatever inspires you to move—lean into it.

6. Reward Yourself Without Using Food

Celebrate your progress, but try to avoid using food as a reward. Instead:

  • Buy yourself new gear or clothes.
  • Book a weekend getaway when you hit a milestone.
  • Sign up for an event or race to work toward something exciting.

Choose rewards that make you feel good while reinforcing your hard work.

4 Mistakes to Avoid When Building Fitness Habits

1. Relying on Willpower Alone

Willpower isn’t infinite—it drains throughout the day, especially when you’re stressed or overwhelmed. The key is building systems that make fitness automatic, so you don’t have to rely on willpower.

2. Depending on Motivation

Motivation is like a spark—it’s great to get started but unreliable for the long haul. Instead, focus on discipline and habits that stick, even when you don’t “feel like it.”

3. Trying to Change Everything at Once

Big changes might promise fast results, but they often lead to burnout. Start small and build gradually. Fitness isn’t a sprint—it’s a lifelong journey.

4. Letting One Setback Derail You

Missed a workout? Ate off plan? Don’t let it snowball into an “all-or-nothing” mindset. One slip-up doesn’t ruin your progress—what matters is how you respond. Keep going.

Consistency Creates Results

At first, building habits might feel uncomfortable or difficult. But over time, those small, consistent actions will become second nature. Fitness will no longer feel like an effort—it will simply be part of who you are.

As the saying goes: What you do every day determines where you’ll end up a year from now. The key is showing up, again and again, until it becomes your new normal.
